Radon Myth #3: My Type Of Home Can’t Have Radon

Fact: Every type of home can be affected by radon. Radon is not just attracted to home models such as ranches and victorian styles, it can be a danger to residents of any and all home models. This is a very common myth regarding radon, and the most common myth that home buyers want to believe is true. In short, no home is more or less susceptible because of its “type” or foundation style.

People often fall victim to the myth that only older homes, drafty homes, under-insulated homes, and homes without basements or homes with walkout basements cannot suffer from dangerous radon levels, but this is simply not true. The basic rule to follow to tell if a home can have radon residing in it is to ask the question, “Does any part of the foundation have direct contact with the soil?” If the answer is “yes”, then the home is susceptible to radon. Don’t fall prey to thinking “if I don’t have a basement, or I don’t use my basement”, that your home is exempt from having a radon problem.
