This is a common myth regarding radon testing, and one many people wish were true. It would be so much easier if radon affected two homes in the same way, especially when located in close proximity. The fact is that your neighbor’s radon test results are not a reliable indicator of what your radon test results should be. As home inspectors, we’ve seen radon tests come back different for homes next door to each other, and we have even seen radon affect two sides of the same duplex differently.
The common argument that people make toward the validity of this myth is that both homes are built on the same soil or even the same plot of land. Even if your homes are built on the same soil, small differences in the soil and each home’s construction practices during the build can affect everything. Even if two homes were built by the same builder, on the same plot of land, they aren’t identical twins. No two houses are built the same, so make sure to test for radon levels in your home, and not assume your neighbor’s test is good enough.
